With prices going up and things feeling more expensive lately, it’s getting harder to stretch your money. Whether you’re still in uni or working full-time, now’s the time to take a closer look at your spending. If you haven’t yet, check out my first post on budgeting — it’s a great place to start!
I know the economy feels like a mess right now, and it’s hard not to stress. But even a few small changes can make a difference — I’ve been trying them myself!
Here are five easy ways to save more, even when the economy isn’t on your side:
1. Review your subscriptions and bills
Netflix, Spotify, gym memberships—do you really use them all? Take a few minutes to cancel anything you’re not using regularly. You can also call your phone or internet provider to ask for a better deal (they often say yes!).
2. Re-think your “Essentials“
Not everything that feels necessary actually is. Could you swap a $20 Uber for public transport, or cut back on takeaway dinners? It’s not about cutting all your fun—it’s just about being more intentional with your choices.
3. Try a no-spend challenge
It sounds scary, but it works. Pick a weekend or a week where you only spend on absolute essentials. It’ll help reset your habits and make you realise where your money goes without even thinking.
4. Build an emergency fund (slow and steady!)
Even if it’s just $10 a week, pop it into a high-interest savings account. It doesn’t have to be a big number to start. Over time, that little cushion gives you more freedom and less stress.
5. Stay flexible with your goals
Times are tough, so give yourself a break if you can’t hit your savings goal every month. The key is to keep going—even small wins count. Keep it realistic, and don’t forget to celebrate progress. Don’t feel pressure to do everything perfectly — even choosing just one tip to start with is a win.
The economy might be unpredictable, but your money mindset doesn’t have to be. Small changes really do add up. And if you’re just starting out, go back and read my budgeting tips for young Aussies to set up your foundation.
